Wildflowers of Kenya
With "Wildflowers of Kenya," I wanted to blend traditional feelings with digital techniques, layering textures and colors to capture Kenya's incredibly diverse ecosystem that spans from semi-arid savannahs to lush highlands, resulting in a rich array of stunning and resilient wildflowers.
Blue Jean Sea
This was the first digital art collage I attempted in my class. These are a pictures of my jeans cropped and reformed to make the ocean. I loved it and the whole creative process. My teacher Nan Henke also did one as well. She actually entered it in a contest! Below is her giving me some snaps on the idea.
Moonflowers That Bite
This piece emerged from pure imagination. I grew Moonflowers when I lived in Austin, Texas and remember the first time they bloomed in the evening. They were so big and beautiful. I imagined them growing all the way up to the moon and giving it a bite. If you look closely at the bed of flowers below, you can see small details of teeth drawn in their petals. The Moonflowers symbolize the reach of creativity and the playful connection between earth and sky.
Murder of Crows
I took the landscaping background of this picture in my digital art teacher’s pasture. It turned into a great outline for a desert. With this piece of art, I wanted to portray survival with style even in harsh conditions. I cropped in a picture of myself in my backyard in my favorite black dress and made my skin the texture of clay for dramatic effect. It’s one of my favorite pieces of art, reflecting resilience and individuality.
In The Grey
These are two pictures I used as an outline: storm clouds and a pond in Florida. I wanted the water and clouds to steam and expand into each other, where there is no beginning or end. At the bottom, I drew in a swan. For me, swans are a beautiful symbol of transformation.
Within My Site
This one is very personal for me. I took a close-up picture of my eye and used it as a guide. I do that a lot—one of my favorite things about doing digital art and Procreate. Both of the boys in this are my sons. The top one is Ricky; I made him lay down by our fireplace and took the picture. The one hanging off my eyelashes is Johnathan; I dragged him out of his bedroom and made him pose in the backyard. I have a day and night version; you can see the day one in my poetry section. Both pieces are a reflection of my eye as the moon and sun, always keeping an eye on them.
God of Trees
This piece was made to reflect a difficult time in my life. I was having trouble sleeping and going through a divorce at the time. I wrote the poem for this long before I drew it. These are real trees in Florida where my fiancé lives. I had to use them; it’s exactly what I was trying to portray in my writing. They look almost god-like with their bold trunks and expanding branches. The trees gift sleep and peace, embodying hope and healing.
Era of Angels
With this piece I did a collage. The little angel and rock walls are in my moms front yard and I took a picture. The flowers are a picture from our local grocery store H-E-B. And the water is actually gold flake. I used the liquify tab and changed the color which gave it that cool melted water look. I love using pictures for stencils and color grabs. The options in digital art are enormously versatile.
